Position Overview:

We are currently seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our dynamic team at E-Therapy. The successful candidate will play a vital role in providing orientation and mobility instruction to students with visual impairments, empowering them to navigate their environment safely and independently.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' orientation and mobility skills, including abilities to travel safely, independently, and efficiently in various environments.
  • Develop individualized orientation and mobility instruction plans based on students' assessed needs, goals, and objectives.
  • Provide direct instruction and training to students in orientation techniques, including concepts of spatial awareness, environmental awareness, and sensory integration.
  • Teach students mobility skills such as cane techniques, sighted guide techniques, route planning, and problem-solving strategies to navigate indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, orientation and mobility specialists, and other members of the educational team to integrate orientation and mobility goals into students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Work closely with families and caregivers to provide training and support in reinforcing orientation and mobility skills in home and community settings.
  • Utilize assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and resources to enhance students' orientation and mobility experiences and independence.
  • Monitor students' progress, collect data on skill acquisition, and adjust instruction and interventions as needed to promote optimal outcomes.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, Rehabilitation Teaching, or related field.
  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or eligibility for certification.
  • Previous experience working as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist or related field in a school or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of visual impairments, sensory processing, and mobility challenges affecting individuals with visual impairments.
  • Strong understanding of special education laws, regulations, and best practices related to orientation and mobility instruction.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, school staff, and related service providers.
  • Proficiency in assessment, documentation, and record-keeping.

Physical Requirements (Working in a School):

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and move around in various areas of the school facility. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents both verbally and in writing. The employee may need to lift or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and may occasionally be required to bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Additionally, the employee must have the physical stamina to supervise and engage with students throughout the school day.
